What other costs are involved in a house clearance?

What are the factors affecting the cost of house and garage clearances?
It is important to understand the key factors affecting the total cost you will pay when given a house clearance quote.
Items that have value are Antiques, art, collectables and high quality designer furniture are the items that have enough resale value to offset against the costs of clearance. We do make sure good quality second hand furniture finds a home, but it usually doesn’t have much value.
- Quantity of the items for clearance
How many items and the size of them. On our pricing page we have a guide to the cost of disposing of items and what you can get in a standard van.
- Quality of the items to be cleared
We are often asked if we can offer discounts or perform free services when performing a house or bereavement clearance. The sad fact is that although items like furniture may be of value to you they often have very little value in the open market. Much of this items we take are worth very little and despite have a network of channels that we sell items through much of what we take is given away as we cannot store items for long periods of time waiting for sale.
Items that have value are Antiques, art, collectables and high quality designer furniture are the items that have enough resale value to offset against the costs of clearance. We do make sure good quality second hand furniture finds a home, but it usually doesn’t have much value. We are however very happy to give advice on how to sell second hand furniture in cases where we think someone else may pay more than we will. We will also help you get it reused by recommending local freecycle initiatives.
- Access to the property or site
Difficult to access properties or houses can incur a surcharge or increase labour costs to offset the time it will take to clear an area.
- Number of vans required to clear a property
Often we can clear a property with a single van however there may be additional fees per van
- Location of the property
Remote locations may require us to add a surcharge to cover the fuel costs
Should I choose to Skip hire for my house clearance?
We are often asked why skip hire is a bad idea and in our opinion it is expensive and the impact on the environment is high due to the use of heavy goods vehicles to remove and drop it. If you don’t have driveway you will also have to pay for a permit which can add to the cost.
The average cost of skip is between £105 and £300 per day. The draw back of this is that in order to optimise the skip usage you will have smash up items meaning they cannot be recycled effectively and skips get full very quickly meaning you may find you need to have multiple to clear an area effectively.
If you want to take a few days to go through your house or garage you could hire a skip. The average cost of skip is between £105 and £300 per day. Skips are usually left for up to 4 days. The draw back of this is that in order to optimise the skip usage you will have smash up items meaning they cannot be recycled effectively and skips get full very quickly meaning you may find you need to have multiple to clear an area effectively. Skip companies can also take weeks to remove a skip once you have finished with it and whether you fill it or not the price will stay the same.
We think it's safe to say skips are not a great option for house clearances however they are good for heavy waste like bricks, soil, rubble and tiles and you can fill them at your leisure.
